What This Pathway Is
Canada's caregiver programs are designed for people who provide in-home care to children or to seniors and people with high medical needs. The current main pathways are the Home Child Care Provider Pilot (HCCPP) and the Home Support Worker Pilot (HSWP), each tied to specific National Occupational Classification (NOC) work.
Most applicants need eligible Canadian work experience in the correct NOC, a valid work permit or maintained status, and language skills at the level IRCC requires. Some legacy streams (Live-In Caregiver Program and pre-2019 caring classes) still apply to people who filed before those programs closed.
Timelines depend on work experience accumulation, work permit validity, and whether a permanent residence application has already been submitted. Planning early — especially around work permit expiry — is critical for caregiver cases.
Are You Likely Qualified?

- You are working or have worked in Canada in NOC 44100 (home child care) or NOC 44101 (home support worker), or you are in a legacy caregiver stream.
- You have or are building toward the required months of eligible full-time Canadian work experience for your stream.
- You hold valid temporary status in Canada or understand your options if your work permit is expiring.
- You meet language requirements for your program (typically CLB 5 in English or French for the pilots).
- You can document employment with letters, pay records, and tax documents in the correct occupation.
